ELGIN, OREGON: Anna Josephine Cason Allen died December 14, 2002. She was born May 2, 1910 to Lloyd and Josephine Cason. She was a retired postmaster at the Elgin Post Office. She is survived by four nephews, Richard Cason, Dallas Cason, Darrell Cason, and Wayne Boswell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lenn D. SISTERS, OREGON: Velda Claire Allen, 50, died December 26, 1969 at Central Oregon District Hospital in Redmond. She was born April 3, 1919 in Prineville to Bert and Maggie Demaris. She was survived by her husband, Cole Allen; two sons, Ronald Winkle of Redmond, and Willis Winkle of Pilot Rock; a stepson, William Cole Allen of Redmond; her parents; and 7 grandchildren. FOREST GROVE, OREGON: Jerry Bur Bellmer, 72, died June 28, 2007. He was born June 12, 1935 to Henry and Velma Crabtree Bellmer. He operated a home inspection service, and also held a real estate license. He was a former radio announcer. He enjoyed cooking, jazz, and playing the drums. He was a former Merchant Marine. He is survived by his wife, Margie; a sister, Bonita of Gearhart, OR; his nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. Cremation arrangements were handled by Duyck and VanDeHey Funeral Home.
CRESWELL, OREGON: Esther Louise Bonebrake, 90, died March 18, 2008. She was born May 9, 1917 to Hiram and Ruth Davis Lyne. She is survived by two daughters, Rachel Rand of Eugene, and Kathryn Manwill of Creswell; two sons, Richard Bonebrake of Creswell, and Keith Bonebrake of Eugene; a brother, Carl Demanett of Cottage Grove; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON: Grace Carlson, 97, died November 19, 1997. She was born November 17, 1900 in Sioux City, IA to Guy and Julia Metcalf. She was a school teacher, and worked in retail sales. She was a former resident of Sioux City, San Diego and Portland, and moved to Cottage Grove in 1979. She is survived by a daughter, Jane Rose of Oakland, CA; 3 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Carlson. CORVALLIS, OREGON: Esther May Castle passed away March 6, 2009. She was born October 12, 1920 to George W. and Lula Fay Allen Wigle. She was a retired house mother with the Oregon State University dormitories with 25 years of service. She enjoyed gardening, needlework, and fishing. She and her husband were co-founders of the Philomath Frolic, and she was the Grand Marshal of the Philomath Frolic's 50th Anniversary Parade. She is survived by two sons, Harvey and Jerry Castle; a daughter, Linda Steele; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was the wife of Melvin O. Castle. Interment was at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Albany under the direction of McHenry Funeral Home.
ALBANY, OREGON: Ngan Yau Chan, 80, died October 4, 2007. She was born September 13, 1927 in Guangdong, China. She and her husband lived in Hong Kong and Colombia, South America before coming to Oregon in the 1970s. She opened Ping's Garden, and also worked at Bing's Kitchen. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and walking. Survivors include her sons, Chung Ngong Lee and Chung Ping Lee; her daughters, Wai Lin Ching and Sandra Lee; a brother, Kwok Chiu Chan; a sister, Pui Ling Chan; 9 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chun Ka Lee; and two sisters. Burial was at Willamette Memorial Park by Aasum-Dufour Funeral Home.

GRESHAM, OREGON: Doris Tappan Connor died October 16, 2010. She was born February 8, 1915 in Waterbury, NE to Munson and Ella Tappan. She worked in the Vancouver shipyards during World War II. She held a master's degree from Columbia University, and also studied in Germany. She and her husband headed the Esperanto Association of North America, and co-authored Esperanto, The World Interlanguage. They traveled the world together. She taught school in New York City, and also taught German at Marshall High School. She was active with the Oregon DAR, serving as Regent and treasurer of the Multnomah Chapter, and as state Regent. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Frances Piper of Exeter, NH; her nieces and nephews; and her friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Connor; her parents; two brothers, Patrick and Jack Tappan; and two sisters, Isabel Peterson and Vestal Westgard. Arrangements were handled by Riverview Funeral Home.

FAIRVIEW, OREGON: Yvonne K. Fabian, 65, died August 24, 2007. She was born June 26, 1942 in Portland to John and Katherine Neiderhaus Pence. ALPINE, OREGON: Franklin H. Fanger, 84, died November 21, 2006. He was born August 4, 1922 to Frank and Anna Fanger. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, and flew 50 missions over Southern Europe. He was a graduate of Oregon State College. He taught school for 20 years, and was also a contractor and logger. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and woodworking. He was a member of the Oregon War Birds, the VFW, Fitness over Fifty, and Gideons International. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Mintonye Fanger; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Stephen Meyer of Monroe, and Chris and Roger Liles of Brookings; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Jan Fanger of Alpine; 5 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Services were held at Junction City First Baptist Church. Interment was at Alpine Cemetery under the direction of McHenry Funeral Home.
EUGENE, OREGON: Dr. Francis E. "Gene" Farthing, 81, died October 29, 2005. He was born April 24, 1924 to Roy and Almonette Adams Farthing. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Oregon College of Education, and held a doctoral degree from the University of Oregon. He was a retired educator, principal and school administrator. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and birdwatching. He was a member of the Southern Oregon Alumni Association, and was a Mason. He is survived by two sons, Michael and Bruce, both of Eugene; and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Mae Farthing; and a son, Timothy.
Burial was at Rest-Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Rest-Haven Memorial Park and Funeral Home.
PORTLAND, OREGON: Melvin Feinstein, 80, died June 20, 2008. He was an independent real estate broker and a commercial appraiser for Multnomah County. He was the founder and president of Commercial Real Estate Brokers of Portland. He was a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club. CANBY, OREGON: Clarence Leroy Fillis, 92, died February 25, 2009. He was born October 18, 1916. He was formerly employed by Johnson Controls, and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of WWII. He was a charter member of New Life Foursquare Church, and enjoyed woodworking and plastic canvas. PENDLETON, OREGON: Evelyn M. Foxley, 96, died January 16, 2006 at Suttle Care and Retirement in Pendleton. She was born December 22, 1909 in Mosier. She and her husband built and operated the Pilot Rock Theater, and she had also worked at J.C. Penney. She enjoyed playing bridge and golfing, and served as president of the Women's Club at the Pendleton Country Club. VENETA, OREGON: Kendall J. "Ken" Hafley, 63, died May 2, 2005. He was born August 10, 1941 in Eugene to William and Edith Petrocitch Hafley. He was a press and dryer operator at Trus Joist McMillan in Eugene, and with his wife, was a camp host at Clay Creek Campground. He enjoyed camping, fishing, four-wheeling and racing boats. He is survived by his wife, Laureen Nichols Hafley; three daughters, Angie Estacio of Portland, and Alisha Hafley and Heather Hafley, both of Veneta; and 2 grandchildren. She and her husband co-owned the Dairy Delish in St. Helens, and she formerly worked at a grocery store in Tillamook. She was active with the Moose, Eagle, and Elks Lodges, and enjoyed dancing, reading, bowling, cooking, and playing cards. MEDFORD, OREGON: Gene Ronald Johnson, 61, died August 8, 2000. He was born June 10, 1939 in Egeland, ND to Axel and Lilly Haller Johnson. He owned a Volkswagen repair shop and a gun shop. WARM SPRINGS, OREGON: Cyrus Katchia, 90, died June 23, 2007. He was born October 13, 1916 to William and Eliza Manse Katchia. He was a boys' advisory counselor for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and was also a road engineer and surveyor for the BIA. He served as a Warm Springs tribal councilman, and was on the land use committee and water board. He enjoyed sports, and was an umpire for high school and American Legion baseball games. He is survived by three sons, John S. Katchia, Sr., Lyle R. Katchia, and William Katchia, all of Warm Springs; three daughters, Louise Katchia, Cassie Katchia, and Tina Aguilar, all of Warm Springs; and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. BEND, OREGON: Ellen Elizabeth Hodge Rose died August 9, 2008. She was born October 23, 1922 to Alfred and Isabella Firmin Hodge. In the late 1960s, she worked at North Pacific Products building balsa wood toy planes and other toys; she was a housekeeper and laundry person at local motels, and worked at Kerns Furniture for many years. She married Alvin Rose in 1944 in Harrison, AR. They later moved to Oregon, where she lived over 40 years in the Old Mill District on Riverfront Street. She volunteered at St. Charles Medical Center for over 30 years, worked in the nursery at Eastmont Christian Church, and served as a precinct person in her voting district. She was president of the VFW Auxilary, master of the Pine Forst Grange, and secretary of a local book club. Survivors include her sons, Ray, Larry, and Dennis; a daughter, Linda Bach; four brothers; a sister; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Chet Schiewe of Pendleton; two daughters, Karen Schiewe and Sandy Macomber, both of Pendleton; a son, Roger Schiewe of Beaverton; a sister, Sally Culver of Woodburn; 5 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Dorothy Nicholson and Verbu Lingel. Services were held at the First United Methodist Church of Pendleton. Burial was at Olney Cemetery.
DALLAS, OREGON: Walter E. Schmitke, 94, died January 20, 2008. He was born August 12, 1913 in Portland to Daniel and Malvena Ratzlaff Schmitke. He attended Northwestern Business College. He was the longtime owner of Atlas Lumber Co. in Falls City, and later owned Heather Lane Mobile Villa in Dallas. He was a member of Salt Creek Baptist Church since 1944, and was one of the founders of Camp Tapawingo Church Camp near Falls City. He enjoyed sports and music, and helped tutor children at Lyle Elementary School for 10 years. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Florence Trachsel Schmitke; his children, Dick and Judy, Daniel and Barbara, David and Chris, and Carol and Harry Dunham; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Services were held at Salt Creek Baptist Church. Interment was at Salt Creek Cemetery with arrangements by Dallas Mortuary.
PORTLAND, OREGON: Vera L. Schneider, 97, died June 3, 2008. She was born April 6, 1911 to the late Walter and Anna McFadden Blacker. BAKER CITY, OREGON: Ted Smietana, 84, died May 12, 2008. He was born October 25, 1923 to Andy and Mary Smietana. He was a retired service station operator, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. ROSEBURG, OREGON: Waldo Franklin Smith, 91, died November 16, 2009. He was born October 15, 1918 to Joseph and Nellie Hughes Smith. He served as a medic during World War II, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a former equipment operator and timber industry employee. He was a longtime member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local #2949. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jane C. Johnson Smith; two sisters, Elaine and Norma; a brother, Carl; his brothers–in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Weston, Burk (Wanda) Johnson, Pete (Jenny) Kennedy, Betty Kiser, Emma (Archie) McCoy, Richard Johnson, Patton (Gin) Johnson, Blanch Rickoff, Randy Johnson, and Joe (Lois) Johnson; his nieces and nephews; and his friends. He was preceded in his parents; two brothers, Wendell and Harry; three sisters, Mamie, Elma, and Silvia; and a sister-in-law, Nora. Interment with military honors was at Roseburg Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wilson's Chapel of the Roses.

CORVALLIS, OREGON: William F. "Bill" Somppi, 82, died January 11, 2009. He was born August 30, 1926 to Alex and Sadie Crume Somppi. He was an educator with the Corvallis School District for over 30 years, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Brownsville Museum Board of Directors, and enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was a local consulting rosarian for the Corvallis Rose Society. ASHLAND, OREGON: Mary Katherine Fischer Sorenson, 89, died November 26, 2009. She was born June 4, 1920 to Wellmuth and Larue Newcomb Fischer. She was a ship welder in Portland during World War II. She attended Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, and was a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed bridge, bowling, and reading, and won several Senior Division golf tournaments. She is survived by six sons, Dennis L., Harvey D., Dale E., John L., Donald J., and David P. Sorenson; three sisters; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey L. Sorenson. Services were held at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. GRANTS PASS, OREGON: Oma Grace Stalker, 91, died June 2, 2009. She was born January 10, 1918 to Russell and Anne LeFever. She was the owner of Oma and Friends Tours, which served southern Oregon and Yreka, CA. She also organized Reno bus tours, and retired at the age of 89. She was founding member of the Boys and Girls Club of Grants Pass, and enjoyed the company of her toy poodles. She was preceded in death by her only son. Entombment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum by Hull and Hull Funeral Directors.

SALEM, OREGON: Gerald Leo Vandehey died January 12, 2011. He was born September 6, 1948 in Woodburn, OR to Robert and Frances Vandehey. He was attended Mount Hood Community College on a basketball scholarship, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Oregon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a shop teacher at Vernonia High School, and later moved to Salem. He enjoyed carpentry and making furniture for his family. He is survived by two sisters, Susan Vandehey of Salem, and Judy Gatchel of Milwaukie; two brothers, John and Tom Vandehey, both of Woodburn; a nephew, Robert Bachelder of Oregon City; and a great-niece. Interment was at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland under the direction of Crown Memorial Center.
EAGLE CREEK, OREGON: Robert Wayne "Bob" Walter died December 5, 2008. He was born August 21, 1953 to Clarence and Norma Tamerius Walter. He was a machinist at Boeing, and was a U.S. Navy veteran. ST. HELENS, OREGON: Lloyd Wintermute, 72, died August 19, 2004. He was born February 22, 1932. He was a retired iron worker with 35 years of service, and was a member of Local #29. He helped build the Fremont Bridge, the U.S. Bancorp building, and many other buildings and structures. He formerly worked at the Kendrick Ranch, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. YAMHILL, OREGON: George W. Yates died November 9, 2007. He was born February 15, 1909 to Charles Henry and Elnora Holland Kutch Yates. He was a farmer and logger, and enjoyed hunting. He was a past member of the Small Woodland Association and the Yamhill High School board. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Earl Yates; and a grandson, Dennis Yates. BANKS, OREGON: Emil George Zimmerman, 95, died April 19, 2006. He was born March 20, 1911 to Emil and Katherine Becker Zimmerman. He was a self-employed television repairman, and formerly worked for the U.S. Forestry Service. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and playing horseshoes. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. HARBOR, OREGON: George A. Zynda, 76, died August 7, 2000. He was born February 15, 1924. He retired fromPacific Bell with 30 years of service, and was a World War II veteran. He enjoyed fishing, and often went to Lake Don Pedro. He is survived by his wife, Betty Zynda; two daughters, Christine (Bill) Oldham of Redwood Valley, and Patti Mattern and Joe Cooke of Ukiah, CA; two stepdaughters, Roberta Atay of Gladstone, and Susan (Dewinn) Brady of Harbor; his grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Colleen Zynda; a daughter, Rosemary Zynda; a son, Thomas Zynda; and a brother, Earl Zynda. Interment was at the Ukiah Cemetery in Ukiah, CA.
